This message is to advertise a training opportunity with Citizens UK (CUK) that may be of interest to research staff and postgraduate researchers in the Colleges of Life & Environmental Sciences (University of Birmingham) involved in carrying out, organising or designing public engagement as part of pathways to impact in research projects or for outreach. CUK are key partners in a current NERC funded public engagement project ‘ENCOMPASS’ and already have a strong relationship with the University through College of Social Sciences.
CUK are kindly offering to run a half day listening workshop in how to conduct a listening campaign (a way to engage with and develop a relationship with a community group). This could be a potentially powerful way to set up pathways to impact and develop novel public engagement partnerships for existing and future research projects. Even if your research isn’t directly linked to communities, understanding how to engage with community groups could help to unlock novel links and impacts as well as new research opportunities.
The workshop will focus on qualitative research practice in community organising (where the aim is to help a community to make a change). It will cover the principals of community organising, explain the objectives, design and management of a listening campaign and will provide the skills and tools for community organising.
We have up to 15 spaces only, so register your interest asap to avoid disappointment.
The work shop will be held on Tuesday the 19th December from 1.30-4.30, venue Earth Imaging Laboratory, Earth Sciences lower ground floor Aston Webb (building R4 on campus maps but you can find the EI lab at the back of the Lapworth Museum).
If you are interested in this opportunity or would like to know more please email ENCOMPASS PI, c.t.stevenson@bham.ac.uk or the University’s Research Engagement Officer, Dr Caroline Gillett c.d.t.gillett@bham.ac.uk directly.
Kind regards
Carl and Caroline
